SolidWorks error, missing add-ins

  • : Many missing SOLIDWORKS add-ins after installing or updating SOLIDWORKS. We believe this is a problem caused by Microsoft update KB3072630(https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/MS15-074) which was released on 15 July 2015 and makes changes to the Windows Installer.  The following steps have been used to fix machines which ALREADY show the problem:
    1. Uninstall SOLIDWORKS
    2. Uninstall KB3072630 A) Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, clicking View installed updates. B) Select update KB3072630, and then click Uninstall. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. Reboot
    4. Reinstall SOLIDWORKS
    5. Important note: We have seen that if KB3072630 is uninstalled before attempting to uninstall SOLIDWORKS, the SOLIDWORKS uninstall will fail. If you have customers who have already done this please advise them to use this tool to remove

Rapid Prototyping tips

3D Systems posted some good tips.

My own tip is if you need a tapped hole in the printed part, model a hole that is smaller than the tap drill size. Tap the thread after you receive the part. Sending the part to be printed with the thread usually does not result with a good thread because of shrinkage/expansion and tolerance.

SolidWorks, thumbnails not showing

Thumbnails not showing? Here is a fix that worked for me (Windows 7).

1.     Click the Start Button, then in the “Start Search” box type CMD but DO NOT press Enter yet.

2.     In the list above, under “Programs” right-click on CMD that appears above and choose “Run as Administrator” and click “Continue”.

3.     Select Yes in the popup window.

4.     Type regsvr32 sldthumbnailprovider.dll5. If this line alone doesn’t work, you have to go to the folder then run it.

5.     To get to the folder: Type cd\, then type cd\program files\solidworks corp\solidworks (2).

6.      It will notify you that it was successful. Type Exit.
